Search options

The image database can be searched using a variety of methods. You can search by habitat, depth, region, picture description, and by using our interactive maps.

You can search for images featuring a particular habitat using a drop-down menu. This will return all images classed as coming from that particular habitat. Note that this classification is broad, so for example under the category ‘boulders, cobbles and gravels’, images of any single habitat or combination of the three will be returned.

If you have a depth range in mind that you wish to search on – or just want to look at the variation in habitats at a particular depth range then this is possible by entering the maximum and minimum depth you wish to see images from.

You can search by broad region, for example, "Faroe-Shetland Channel" or "Rockall Trough" by using the drop-down menu.

You can also search using simple descriptive text. All images are accompanied by a description of the contents and you can search this description. For example, if you are looking for images featuring feather-stars, you simply type in either "feather-star" or "crinoid" (we have tried to include both scientific and common terminology).

Finally for those wishing to look at all images from a particular region we have included some interactive maps (see here) that enable you to click on the region around the UK that you wish to see images from – these will then zoom in further to give you more options and eventually return a set of images from that region.
